Greg Clark appointed select committee chair

Greg Clark has won the race to become chair of the House of Commons science and technology select committee.

The speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle announced  last night (29 January) that the ex-business and energy secretary of state defeated his rival Stephen Metcalfe, who is a former chair of the committee.

Clark succeeds ex-Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb who held the post until stepping down from Parliament at last month’s general election.

As well as becoming the first secretary of state at the department for business, energy and industrial strategy in 2016, Clark shadowed the department for energy and climate change when the Conservatives were last in opposition.

The science committee’s inquiries during the last year included a probe into clean growth.

Other select committee votes announced tonight included the chairmanship of the environment audit committee, which was won by Conservative MP Philip Dunne, who takes over from Labour’s Mary Creagh after she lost her seat at the general election.

And Angus MacNeil will oversee the international trade committee. The Scottish Nationalist Party MP chaired the then energy and climate change committee during the 2015 parliament.
