Half of public still unaware of smart meters

In the second ‘public awareness, attitude and experience of smart meters survey’, conducted by Ipsos Mori, 50 per cent of people in October 2012 had heard of smart meters, compared to 49 per cent in April 2012.

The support for smart meters also remained unchanged, with 29 per cent still in favour of the nationwide roll-out, while 19 per cent of respondents opposed it.

Interest in installing a smart meter remained at 4 out of ten people, although there was an increased interest in obtaining information. Half of the people questioned expressed an “information need”, compared to a third in the previous survey.

The survey also highlighted that younger and larger households tended to support and show a greater interest in smart meters, while older people had a lower engagement rate.
