The plant near Lancaster has now been running without break for 896 days since 18 February 2014
The record has lasted for 22 years. It was previously held by the Pickering 7 plant in Ontario in Canada, which was in continuous operation for 894 days between 26 April 1992 and 7 October 1994.
Heysham 2 features two advanced gas cooled reactors with a combined generating capacity of 1.23GW – enough to power around 2 million homes. The plant is owned and operated by EDF, and is designed to be refueled without having to be shut down.
Station director John Munro said: “This is a fantastic achievement and is testament to the professionalism of the team we have here at Heysham 2.
“This record comes in the station’s 28th year of operation which shows what can be done with a skilled team and targeted investment in the plant.
“Earlier this year we extended the operating life of Heysham 2 by seven years to 2030 and over the next 14 years I’d like us to be challenging our own new operating record.”
