Evans will leave his current position as Centrica Energy’s director of operational support and take overall responsibility for developing Horizon’s operational capability at the Wylfa Newydd site, previously referred to as Wylfa B.
He will also perform a senior representational role for Horizon on Anglesey, liaising with local organisations and key groups across the region, Wales, the UK, and internationally.
Wylfa Newydd is the name of Horizon’s project to build a new nuclear power station at Wylfa, beside the existing operational Magnox plant.
Evans was previously site director at for Magnox’s Wylfa power plant, as well as the Trawsfynydd nuclear site in Snowdonia.
He said Wylfa Newydd will be “crucial” for the UK’s energy future. “I’m excited to be joining the team delivering it,” he continued. “Nuclear power has played a vital role in supplying the UK with secure, low-carbon electricity since the 1950s and this new development will help ensure it does so for another 60 or more years.”
Horizon’s chief operating officer Alan Raymant hailed Evans as a “highly experienced and well-respected nuclear operations leader”.
“We are delighted to have him on board. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and of managing large-scale energy projects and it’s a great time for Greg to join as we continue to grow as a company and increase our operational capabilities,” he said.
Horizon Nuclear Power was formed by RWE Npower and Eon in 2009 to develop new nuclear power stations in the UK. The company was bought by Japanese company, Hitachi, in November 2012.
