Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Galán co-signed an open letter to world leaders urging “firm and concrete steps” towards an ambitious climate agreement at the Paris climate summit in December.
The utility owner co-signed the letter alongside other major energy companies including UK business energy supplier GDF Suez, and UK renewable project developers Dong Energy, Statkraft and Vestas Wind Systems.
The companies have committed to adopt voluntary actions to reduce environmental and carbon footprints, set targets to reduce emissions and collaborate with supply chains in order to achieve this.
In addition, the firms have also committed to driving initiatives aimed at raising public awareness on the consequences of climate change.
“As businesses, we have the obligation to contribute to sustainable development by fully integrating the environmental dimension in our strategy and management,” Galán said.
Iberdola said in a statement that it has already cut its global carbon emissions by 6 per cent and has been implementing a corporate policy on climate change since 2009.
