Iconic Inverkip chimney demolished

The chimney stack at Inverkip Power Station, the tallest free-standing structure in Scotland at 236m, was brought down in a controlled explosion.

The 2GW power station, which got planning permission in 1970, was designed to meet peak demand.

However, due to soaring oil prices later that decade, the plant became instantly obsolete. It only ran in 1984/85 when the miners’ strikes caused a coal shortage.

It was kept as strategic reserve until the late 1990s when the plant was mothballed.

The site is to be cleared for housing.
