Innogy has begun offshore construction of the 857MW Triton Knoll windfarm, which was one of three offshore wind projects to win a Contract for Difference in the 2017 auction.
The crane vessel Seaway Strashnov arrived on site earlier this month and will begin installing the monopile foundations for the 90 turbines that will make up the windfarm as soon as weather allows.
Two offshore substation platforms and 600 kilometres of subsea will also be installed this year. Installation of the 9.5MW turbines will begin in 2021.
Project director Julian Garnsey said: “We are looking forward to a busy year installing Triton Knoll’s innovative foundations and offshore substation platforms, further demonstrating innogy’s continued commitment towards ever more sustainable electricity generation for consumers.”
Construction of the onshore electrical system, including a substation and a 57-kilometre underground cable, began last year and is expected to be completed in 2020.
Triton Knoll secured Contract for Difference at a strike price of £74.75 (2012 prices). Innogy sold minority stakes in the project to J-Power (25 per cent) and Kansai Electric Power (16 per cent) in August 2018.
