Irish networks respond in the wake of Storm Ali

Network operators in Northern Ireland and the Irish republic have responded in the wake of Storm Ali, which claimed the life of a Northern Ireland Water contractor on Wednesday (19 September).

Northern Ireland Energy Networks (NIE Networks) restored power to more than 90,000 customers after the storm hit last week.

As of Friday (21 September) around 1,900 properties were without power, the majority of which were in mid Ulster and the south east areas.

Over the course of the day around 500 workers were working to restore power.

NIE Networks has since confirmed that all customers who lost power due to the storm have had electricity supplies restored, with the last customer having their power restored at 3.30am on Saturday (22 September).

A spokesperson for NIE Networks said: “We would like to thank our customers for their patience over the last number of days. We understand that being without electricity for any period of time can be frustrating but we’d like to reassure them that we have been working to restore faults as quickly and safely as possible.”

NIE added a small number of customers may experience interruption to electricity supplies over the coming days as it undertakes permanent repair works.

Meanwhile Gas Networks Ireland, based in Cork, said its network remained unaffected by the storm.

A spokesperson for Gas Networks Ireland said: “The Irish natural gas network was unaffected by Storm Ali.  The risk of damage to the gas network is lower than other utilities, as the network is largely underground.

“Gas Network Ireland’s emergency response team were prepared to respond to issues, had they arisen, however there was no damage to the network.”

Storm Ali, which battered the island of Ireland and parts of the United Kingdom with winds of around 91mph claimed the life of a man believed to be in his 20s.

The man, an employee of a contractor working for Northern Ireland Water, is believed to have been struck by a tree at a water pumping station at Slieve Gullion Forest Park, County Armagh.

NI Water chief executive, Sara Venning, said: “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of this young man.  This was a tragic incident and NI Water will continue to work with the statutory authorities and the contractor as they carry out their investigations.”
