John Major calls for energy company windfall tax

Speaking at a press gallery lunch, Major reportedly said “I can’t see it is any way acceptable” that people will have to choose between heating and eating.

However, he criticised Labour leader Ed Miliband’s proposal to freeze energy prices for 20 months if elected. The plan “shows a good heart but his head had gone walkabout”, Politics Home editor Paul Waugh quoted him as saying.

Tweeting from the event, Waugh commented: “ irony of course is Major was whacked in 97 by a Lab party advocating a windfall tax.”
