Less than one per cent of domestic energy meters are ‘smart’

The statistics revealed that 402,600 smart meters were operating in “smart mode”, which makes up 0.9 per cent of all domestic meters operated by seven of the larger energy suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE and Utility Warehouse.

A total of 491,900 smart meters were installed and in operation by the end of June 2014.

Of these, 60,200 electricity and 37,100 gas smart meters were installed during April, May and June of this year.

Over the same period, a total of 1,500 smart meters (all electricity) and 20,200 advanced meters (19,900 electricity meters and 300 gas meters) were installed in to smaller non-domestic sites.

By the end of June 2014, a total of 493,700 smart and advanced meters were operating in smaller non-domestic sites, representing 18 per cent of all smaller non-domestic site meters operated by the larger suppliers.

The rollout of smart meters is still in its “foundation” stage, with the mass, nationwide rollout set to begin in autumn 2015.
