Mike O’Connor quits Consumer Futures to head debt advice charity

Consumer Futures chief executive Mike O’Connor is leaving to head up a debt advice charity in the new year, he announced last week.

O’Connor leaves the watchdog to join Step Change, which aims to help those struggling financially to pay back what they owe.

He will not be directly replaced at Consumer Futures, which is being split up with 77 staff moving to Citizens Advice, Citizens Advice Scotland and the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland next March. Director Adam Scorer leads the transition.

O’Connor said of the move: “I will miss the wider consumer world but I look forward to becoming more involved in issues around personal finance…

“I am honoured and excited to be joining an organisation which is doing such excellent work in tackling problem debt which causes so much damage to individuals, families and society.”
