More than 6 million SMETS2 smart meters installed on network

More than 6 million SMETS2 smart meters have been installed onto the network, the Data Communications Company (DCC) has revealed.

The milestone was announced on the company’s website this afternoon (25 November).

As it stands there are currently just over 8 million interoperable devices that have been integrated onto the DCC’s network, with more than 2 million first-generation (SMETS1) devices having been migrated.

The company says October was the busiest month for SMETS2 installations ever, even before the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to all but emergency installations.

In April it was revealed that smart meter installations had seen a 95 per cent decrease due to the first UK-wide lockdown, with the rollout having since recovered.

According to the latest figures from Electralink almost a quarter of a million (247,000) smart meters were installed in October – 7 per cent more than the previous month and the highest so far this year.

As part of Utility Week Live Online there will be a series of talks held tomorrow (26 November) during a panel session titled Smarter Approaches to Smart Metering. Three industry observers will give their view on the rollout, as well as the challenges they have faced in relation to the devices. You can register for the event here.
