National Gas app to show network in near real-time

National Gas has launched a new app which will provide near real-time insights into Great Britain’s gas market.

The app, which has been hailed by energy security minister Graham Stuart, will show data and insights from the National Gas GSO (Gas System Operator) using interactive maps and charts.

It will display comprehensive data about where the country’s gas comes from, where it is needed and what it is being used for. It builds on a similar app for the electricity network.

National Gas said the app offers “an opportunity to understand the scale and importance of the gas system”.

“Through making information about the gas system accessible, the app intends to enhance the public’s understanding of the transmission system’s significance in transitioning to net zero – particularly with new fuels including hydrogen,” it added.

Jon Butterworth, chief executive of National Gas, said: “Our app will be a powerful tool that offers data and insights into the gas system, filling a gap in the market for people looking to understand more about the role of our national gas network.

“Visibility of the scale of the national gas network will be particularly important as we look to repurpose our network to hydrogen as the country transitions to net zero.”

Energy security and net zero minister Graham Stuart said: “National Gas has produced an innovative app to improve everyone’s understanding of the gas network and the role it is playing on our path to net zero.

“With more data on the sources of and demand for gas in the country, this app will showcase the importance of gas to the UK’s energy mix and future energy security.”

The app is now available for download on both iOS and Android devices.
