National Grid ranks system stability as top priority

National Grid System Operator has ranked system stability as its top priority in its innovation strategy for 2019/20.

The document says it is exploring new ways to maintain the stability of the power grid as the loss of inertia from synchronous generation leaves it more susceptible to sudden changes in frequency.

Adopting a whole-system approach to the operation of the energy system came in second place on the list, followed by the development of future markets.

Katye O’Neil, head of strategy and regulation for National Grid System Operator, described the plan as a “call to arms” for the energy industry.

The strategy, released on Friday (5 April), is the last in a week-long series of reports published following the legal separation of the electricity system operator (ESO) from the rest of National Grid at the beginning of April.

Earlier in the week, the ESO announced its intention to make the power grid ready for zero-carbon operation by 2025.
