Network operators have announced plans to build a “proof-of-concept” digital map of the energy system, including network assets, generators, and energy intensive users.
The Energy Networks Association (ENA) will work with Ordnance Survey (OS) and 1Spatial to pull together data from electricity and gas networks into an integrated map covering the entirety of Great Britain.
The map will initially provide a snapshot of the energy system at a particular moment in time, giving users information about network assets, where they are located and who owns them. The ENA said the project will demonstrate the model it is developing for a full National Energy System Map that would be continuously updated.
“This ground-breaking project proves how we can harness the power of data to deliver the technologies which will define the industry’s net zero future,” said ENA head of innovation Dan Clarke.
“Providing more transparency of the electricity and gas networks will help companies in and out of the energy industry to make investment decisions more intelligently.
“Crucially it can support emerging markets and help projects like new renewables sites or electric vehicle fleets connect to the networks.”
