Climate change minister Nick Hurd said he is reviewing the country’s progress and doesn’t want to release the plan prematurely.
“I think there’s some flexibility around the publication,” he was quoted as saying at an event in London. “It’s more important to get this right than to rush something out that doesn’t hit the target.”
The document will outline how the government intends go about meeting the fifth carbon budget which it agreed to in June. The budget commits the UK to reducing its carbon emissions by an average 57 per cent on 1990 levels during the period 2028-2032.
The plan had been expected to be published towards the end of this year. Hurd’s comments suggest it may in fact be delayed until next year. He also said Britain would ratify the Paris climate change agreement “as soon as possible”.
