New shadow energy and water ministers named

Jonathan Reynolds and Julie Elliott have come into the shadow Decc team, while Luciana Berger, the previous shadow climate change minister, is now the shadow public health minister.

Gavin Shuker leaves the environment team for international development. His responsibilities for water and waste are picked up by Thomas Docherty, who has served on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee.

Reynolds, the MP for Stalybridge and Hyde will leave his position as Miliband’s parliamentary private secretary, which he has held for two years, to take up the climate change brief.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to be taking up this role. Climate change is a hugely important issue and represents one of the most significant challenges of our time.

“It is a challenge Ed Miliband and the Labour Party are determined to meet, and I know this is an area of considerable personal interest to Ed.

“In addition, the role comes with a wide-ranging list of responsibilities, and I will be seeking to do all I can to hold the government to account for not easing the cost of living crisis in Britain.”

Julie Elliott, the MP for Sunderland Central, has also been appointed to the shadow Decc team in today’s reshuffle, saying on Twitter she was “delighted” to join Labour’s shadow ministerial team.
