Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) is working on a £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure and reduce the risk of flooding in Belfast.
The company said some of the sewers within the Ormeau Avenue, Bruce Street and Sandy Row areas, which date back to the early 1900s are in “very poor condition” and the work will bring the city into the 21st century.
The upgrade will also help reduce environmental pollution and “significantly improve” the water quality in the River Lagan, NI Water said.
“Work is progressing well at the new wastewater pumping station site on Hardcastle Street and phase one of the pipe-laying is complete on Adelaide Street, with work now under way on Linenhall Street,” according to a statement from the company.
It anticipates all work on Linenhall Street will be completed by the end of August.
Further pipe laying works are scheduled to take place on the Dublin Road from mid-July until the end of August.
