Northumbrian Water to harness all sewage sludge for electricity by summer

The company is already using advanced anaerobic digestion (AD) to convert the sludge into biogas at a plant in Teeside. A second plant in Tyneside, due to start commissioning at the end of this month, will double the water company’s generating capacity, using all the company’s sewage sludge and providing power for nearly half the company’s pumps.

Mottram told the conference the company hoped to extend its AD portfolio to process food waste, and inject biogas into the gas grid, but to do that changes were required in waste regulations.

She also highlighted plans to develop more hydropower projects within the company’s water system. But she said to make such projects viable they needed “stable and long term” financial incentives.
