Octopus Energy Generation has revealed it is adding a third wind turbine to its Fan Club tariff model for customers in Halifax, West Yorkshire.
At 2MW, the latest turbine, part of the Ovenden Moor windfarm, is significantly larger than the current two 500kW turbines at Caerphilly in South Wales and Market Weighton in Yorkshire.
The company said the turbine at Ovenden Moor can generate enough power annually for 2,000 homes, five times more than the company’s first two turbines.
Octopus said the tariff will be available to customers in the HX2 postcode and will offer a 50% discount off the unit rate when wind speeds are above 11 m/s. The company claims its tariff can save up to £350 on their annual energy bill.
Furthermore, Octopus said it has had 10,000 people contact the company to ask for a wind turbine near their home following the launch of Fan Club in January last year.
Zoisa North-Bond, chief executive of Octopus Energy Generation, said: “Welcoming customers onto our Number 3 Fan in Halifax means more people can benefit from cheap, green energy when it’s abundant locally. This is especially important as people are facing much higher energy bills this winter.
“But we are not going to stop here – we are working round the clock to add many more wind turbines to our Fan Club model, putting money back into people’s pockets whilst driving renewables at scale.”
Speaking to Utility Week earlier this year, North-Bond talked about the plans to expand the Fan Club model.
She said: “We have five that are going to be launched immediately this year, so very, very soon. We’re just about to sign all of the land leases on those.
“There will be at least 30 in the next two years and we’ve actually said there will be 2,000 – that’s in this market and across the world – by the end of the decade. And that’s something we’re estimating will be about £4 billion worth of investment that we’ll raise to deploy that.”
