Octopus cuts electricity costs for coastal customers on windy days

Octopus Energy has extended its Fan Club tariff to coastal communities living near to offshore windfarms.

Initially available to communities living along the coastline from Grimsby to Skegness, Fan Club customers will be eligible for up to 50% off their electricity when their local offshore wind farm is producing lots of electricity.

The retailer launched Fan Club in 2021 for customers living close to one of its onshore wind turbines in Market Weighton and Halifax, Yorkshire, and Caerphilly, Wales. Since then Octopus has received over 20,000 requests for local wind turbines in communities. The scheme has now also expanded into the US and Germany.

This is the first time Octopus has offered its tariff to customers living near offshore windfarms.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, said: “Our Fan Club demonstrates just how much people love wind in Britain. It’s fantastic to now expand this pioneering scheme to those living near offshore wind farms too. People overlooking these majestic wind farms along the coastlines from Grimsby to Skegness will now be able to benefit from cheaper electricity which it’s windy.

“We’ve loved bringing customers out to see the Lincs offshore wind farm. Our customers inspire us massively – they are highly engaged members of the energy system, passionate about participating in the transition to a greener energy future while making savings on their bills at the same time.”

The expansion of the Fan Club tariff comes after Octopus’ announced plans to invest £15 billion in offshore wind globally.

Earlier this month, Octopus took a stake in global offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore.

The firm’s Generation’s fund management team now manages 3.2GW of renewable energy projects across 15 countries, worth £6 billion.

Projects that Octopus already has stakes in include the Lincs offshore windfarm and Hornsea One in England, as well as the Borselle V wind farm in the Netherlands. It also invests in Simply Blue, a developer of floating offshore wind.
