Ofgem launches campaign to help students switch

The energy regulator has updated its ‘Be an energy shopper’ campaign and has told student renters that they could save up to £200 be changing their energy supplier.

Ofgem is trying to “dispel the myth” that renters have to accept the energy supplier that is already in place when they move in.

The regulator’s 2014 Consumer Engagement survey showed that 77 per cent Britons living in rented accommodations have never switched energy supplier and one in five was not aware of their right to switch.

Renters are also half as likely to switch compared to homeowners with 26 per cent of renters saying they had ever switched gas supplier compared to 47 per cent of homeowners.

Colum McGuire, vice president of the National Union of Students, encouraged students to switch, and added that said there were “substantial savings” to be made.
