Ofgem provides key insights into energy sector

Ofgem has published three infographics which provide details on a number of key areas within the energy sector.

Areas that are explored include price, company performance and the UK’s power mix.

The first reveals that as of October 2019, 64 energy suppliers operated in the UK market. This follows a year which saw a number of retailers cease trading.

It also shows how the larger players still dominate, with more than a 70 per cent share of the domestic market.

Furthermore, this graphic reveals that the UK ranks below average on gas prices and around average on electricity prices when compared to its European neighbours.

The second graphic analyses company performance and reveals that Ofgem’s latest numbers show 3.7 million complaints were made by energy customers to their suppliers in 2018.

Between 2014-2018, distribution network operators (DNOs) paid £29 million for failing to meet guaranteed standards for gas and electricity distribution.

As well as showing the UK’s fuel mix, the third graphic highlights how much support has been given to customers in vulnerable circumstances.

Specifically it states that £2.45 billion has been paid through the warm home discount since its launch in 2011, while £341 million was invested by suppliers in support of vulnerable consumers in 2018/2019.
