OFT warns energy efficiency firms about poor practice

A review by the OFT found that the behaviour of some businesses include high pressure sales techniques and poor quality installations, and risk undermining consumer confidence ahead of the launch of the Green Deal on 28 January.

Consumer Focus has praised the OFT for contacting more than 50 of the leading installers of double glazing, insulation and solar panels, reminding them to ensure they meet good standards, and that they could face ‘enforcement action’ if they fail to meet them.

Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at Consumer Focus, said: “The Green Deal is likely to see more consumers looking to invest in energy efficiency measures, so before they proceed, people need to be aware of their rights and how to spot potential pitfalls.”

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has said the Green Deal quality mark, which can only be displayed by authorised businesses, will ensure rigorous protections are in place and that customers are fully protected.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker has also said that a relaxation in planning laws will make it easier for householders to install external solid wall insulation.

Speaking this morning, Barker said by classifying the measure as home improvement, rather than enlargement or extension, means installing solid wall insulation “will not represent a problem for the vast majority of people”.
