Rules for using environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional drainage systems have been approved by Ofwat as part of new sewerage asset proposals for construction
Water companies were asked in 2017 to come up with new standards for building sewerage assets. These are to be used by those working in construction sectors and cover the transference of sewerage asset ownership.
Rules will come into effect in April 2020 that give clear and comprehensive guidance relating to the building of sewerage assets. These are intended to accelerate housebuilding by ensuring assets are managed and maintained effectively.
They include guidance for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for new housing. This means water companies can quickly and easily take over management and maintenance of the SuDS once the development has been completed.
The SuDS are natural alternatives to traditional drainage systems that take the pressure off sewerage networks and help prevent surface run off and, ultimately, pollutants entering rivers and streams.
Implementation of SuDS was made mandatory in 2015 for developments of 10 houses or more.
