The research also found that 42% of SMEs said they would switch to generating some or all of their own power from renewables if it could be proven that they would make money out of it.
Opus Energy recently launched its power purchase agreement which enables customers to generate additional income from renewable energy.
Some 500 small and medium sized enterprises were asked ‘Is your business considering generating renewable power from its own premises (such as wind turbines/solar panels/anaerobic digestion):
6 per cent already generate renewable power on the premises
8 per cent said within the next 12 months
10 per cent said within the next 1-2 years
4 per cent said within 2-3 years
4 per cent said within 3-5 years
6 per cent said in at least 5 years from now
