Price cap loophole uncovered?

More than seven million households could be excluded from the price cap, according to new research by green energy supplier, Bulb.

It said the government’s proposed price cap legislation currently states ‘green’ tariffs are exempt. This means customers on a tariff that provides a benefit to the environment will not have to have their prices capped.

Bulb estimated this would affect over seven million households. In response to these findings, it has written to MPs on the BEIS (business, energy and industrial strategy) select committee, calling for the loophole to be closed.

Hayden Wood, co-founder of Bulb, said: “Bulb supports the price cap, but we’re disappointed this loophole means companies could continue to overcharge customers.

“This needs to be fixed immediately. We believe a price cap would help customers and the industry, but it must apply to everyone and not allow for spurious exemption claims.”
