RWE downsizes Triton Knoll offshore windfarm

The Triton Knoll development, off the Lincolnshire coast, will be built to a capacity of 600-900MW, down from a potential maximum of 1,200MW. The onshore substation is slimmed down to less than half the size, under the new design.

The energy company claimed the changes would make the site more competitive.

Jacob Hain, project manager, said: “This is an important step forward for the development.  Triton Knoll’s significant contribution of reducing the UK’s carbon emissions and tackling climate change, can now be achieved more efficiently whilst having less impact on the surrounding environment and communities.”

It comes after RWE axed its £4 billion Atlantic Array project in November, citing prohibitive costs of building in deeper waters.

Centrica also took a step back from offshore wind last month, selling off its Race Bank scheme to Dong after it failed to get early approval for subsidies.
