RWE launches international 50GW conventional power business

Following a restructuring, Matthias Hartung will head up the new company, which covers more than 50 sites in the UK, Netherlands and Germany generating a total of around 50 gigawatts.

Taking an international approach to power generation “will help us ensure success in an increasingly difficult market environment”, according to Rolf Martin Schmitz, deputy CEO of RWE Group. The company aims to share the expertise of around 18,000 employees across international boundaries.

Paul Massara, CEO of RWE Npower, is to continue to act as the conglomerate’s figurehead in the UK.

Hartung, who was previously executive vice president of German generation business RWE Power, said: “Price trends for energy resources and electricity are hard to predict. Future market mechanisms remain unclear and subject to change. Renewable energies are becoming more and more important in the European market. Conventional power plants can only hold their own in today’s environment if they are highly efficient, protect the climate and are able to work very flexibly.”
