RWE is to undertake a multi-million-pound upgrade of its 400MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant in Great Yarmouth.
The work will include the installation of new gas turbine technology as well as a major overhaul of the stream turbines and generator.
The tune up, which is scheduled to take place over 2018, will increase plant’s output by 21MW and its combined-cycle efficiency by 2.1 per cent.
RWE said if the power station continues to operate at typical recent generation levels, then the improvements will reduce CO2 emissions from the plant by approximately 180,000 tonnes over the next decade.
There will be an outage of several months during the upgrade and more than 100 extra workers will be employed on site at its peak.
RWE director of hard coal and gas power plant in the UK, Steve Glover, said: “This plant provides a valuable service to both the local community and to the UK electricity system.
“As a key employer in the area, RWE Generation is contributing millions of pounds into the local economy each year and helping with the UK’s security of energy supply in an increasingly flexible energy market.”
Last week Centrica announced the sale of its Langage and South Humber CCGT plants for £318 million to the Czech utility company EPH.
