Big six supplier Scottish Power has launched an electric vehicle (EV) tariff which it claims will allow customers to charge their car at a tenth of the cost of running a standard petrol car per mile.
The 100 per cent renewable SmartPower Green EV January 2021 tariff enables its customers to take advantage of “discounted charging times” between the hours of midnight and 5am.
Keith Anderson, Scottish Power’s chief executive, said: “A tariff that enables drivers to charge their vehicle for up to ten times less than the cost of petrol is a game changer.
“Scottish Power wants to help customers benefit from electric vehicles as quickly as possible as that will help improve air quality and cut carbon quicker.
“Helping to cut the cost of motoring will help people switch to electric vehicles faster.”
Scottish Power also has a smart EV charger, powered by Wallbox, which allows charging to be scheduled in advance with a smartphone app.
The supplier recently claimed it will become the UK’s “first integrated energy company to produce 100 per cent green electricity”.
It has also previously unveiled a partnership with car retailer Arnold Clark allowing buyers to purchase or lease an EV of their choice, book a home charging point installation and sign up to the Scottish Power tariff.
Recent figures released by the national campaign for electric vehicles Go Ultra Low show that almost 60,000 pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars were registered in the UK in 2018, representing a 19 per cent increase from the previous year.
This brings the number of 100 per cent electric and plug-in hybrid cars registered in the UK to date to 196,343.
