Scottish support of wind power on the up

The study shows that a seven in ten majority of Scottish adults now support wind power generation, compared to 64 per cent in February 2013.

The support of onshore wind, in particular, is vital if Scotland is to achieve its ambitious target of meeting 100 per cent of its energy demand through renewable energy by 2020.

Although the year on year increase is relatively modest trade group Scottish Renewables, which commissioned the YouGov report, says it shows that the vocal minority who oppose wind power developments do not reflect Scottish views.

“These poll results highlight once again that not only do the vast majority of Scots support wind power, but the number who do is actually increasing,” said Scottish Renewables senior policy manager Joss Blamire.

The support for Scottish wind is skewed towards the younger generations with 81 per cent of those aged 18-24 backing the technology compared to just 65 per cent of people over the age of 55.
