Scottish windfarm developments celebrate milestones

Renewable energy company Statkraft confirmed that work has started on its 66.7 megawatt onshore wind farm. The company is investing £70 million in Berry Burn Wind Farm, which is expected to generate around 184 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity a year.

The windfarm will use 29 wind turbines provided by Enercon and is scheduled to be operational by early 2014. Statkraft said around 50 jobs will be created during its production.

That news came as SSE Renewables announced that a planned extension to Clyde Wind Farm took a “major step forward”. Two councils covering the windfarm site gave SSE the go-ahead to proceed with the development.

A final decision by Scottish ministers is expected next year, but if approved, the windfarm – located to the north-east of the 350MW Clyde windfarm – will have a maximum generating capacity of 162 megawatts (MW).

Around 500 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase and once operational, 38 more jobs will be created.
