SGN to make £1m saving through driver efficiency

SGN is expecting to make the saving by using TomTom telematics technology to tackle inefficient practice across its 2,000-strong fleet, and save 13,000 litres of fuel a month in the process.

The company has already conducted a 100 vehicle trial in which the volume of fuel wasted through idling was reduced by 68 per cent and average fuel consumption was improved by 11 per cent.

The telematics technology includes a system which scores driver performance based on a range of indicators including speeding, idling, constant speed and gear shifting. It also integrates with SGN’s fleet management provider Inchcape to allow pre-emptive maintenance work to be carried out.

SGN’s head of finance Chris Stone said: “The finance department at SGN recognised a huge opportunity for using driver performance data to transform operational efficiency and we now stand to make major savings on both fuel and maintenance.

“We understand drivers don’t intentionally drive badly so this isn’t about punishing them. Instead, we are focused on working with our employees to help them perform more efficiently and safely on the road.”
