Business secretary Alok Sharma has praised the utilities sector in what he described as an “unparalleled time” for the nation.
In an open letter published by the government Sharma praised the vital work taking place across the sector, adding that it was an essential part of the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
As part of our recently-launched Keeping Us Connected campaign, which aims to showcase the vital role utilities are playing throughout the pandemic, Utility Week will make the case for the government to official recognise the part the sector has played in getting the country through lockdown.
In the open letter published today (30 April), Sharma said: “The work you are doing around the clock to maintain our energy system is vital: keeping fuel flowing, the lights on, our buildings heated and cooled, and ensuring we have access to hot water.
“This work is an essential part of our response to coronavirus (Covid19). During these challenging times, you are enabling essential services to continue to keep the public safe, including the most vulnerable in our society.”
Sharma paid further tribute to the sector’s key workers who are unable to perform their duties at home and have to travel to their place of work.
“I realise this will be challenging for you personally, however you are contributing to the resilience of our nation and I am grateful for the enormous efforts you are making at this testing time,” he added.
