Siemens suspends Skerries Tidal Array plans after funding loss

The Siemens-owned Marine Current Turbines (MCT) had its £10 million grant allocation from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) for the 10MW Skerries tidal array cancelled after the project was delayed beyond agreed deadlines.

At the time the developer admitted that the project would not be able to meet the development milestones required by the MEAD Fund but said that it was committed to delivering the project.

On Tuesday Siemens said in a statement that it continues to believe “that tidal energy will play an important future role in delivering the UK’s low carbon economy” and remains in discussion with suppliers and other key stakeholders on different opportunities.

The Skerries Tidal Array was expected to consist of up to five SeaGen S 2MW devices to deliver a total capacity of up to 10MW.
