Small-scale solar capacity nears 5GW

Small-scale solar capacity reached nearly 5GW in July, according to the latest monthly statistics from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The figures cover installations with a capacity of 5MW or less which have been accredited for the feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme but have not necessarily secured the subsidies.

They show more than 898,000 solar photovoltaic installations had been deployed by the end of the month, providing a combined capacity of 4,943MW. The total capacity was up by less than four per cent when compared to same point last year.

Accredited capacity across all eligible technologies types grew nearly six per cent year-on-year to 6,131MW as the number of installations passed 908,000.

Wind capacity jumped by 37 per cent to 192MW, whilst hydro and anaerobic digestion capacity both rose by 11 per cent to 720MW and 276MW respectively. Micro combined heat and power (CHP) capacity remained flat at a miniscule 0.7MW.

Feed-in tariff installations have tailed off significantly since the government drastically reduced the subsidy rates in early 2016.
