Small supplier gains at ‘all-time high’

The number of customers switching their electricity provider to a smaller supplier has hit an “all-time high”, according to Energy UK.

Figures compiled by Electralink showed that the smaller and independent suppliers gained more than 43 per cent of the switches made in March.

The smaller suppliers gained 116,301 customers last month out of a total of 265,951 electricity switches.

Energy UK said this was “a clear sign the market has become more competitive”.

The overall switches made in March “returned to the average level” following a peak of 615,363 and 391,072 in November and December respectively, but represented an increase of seven per cent between from February.

The trade association added: “Switching is alive and well in the electricity market with more and more customers each month comparing deals and finding the best one for them.

“The energy industry is working hard to make it easier than ever for customers to compare deals and find the best one for them.”
