Smart electricity meter installations hit 16m in July

New figures from Electralink show the electricity smart meter rollout in Great Britain hit 16 million installations since 2012 last month.

In July, 223,000 installations took place – a 47 per cent increase on the same month last year when restrictions were having a major impact on the pace of the rollout.

The 15 millionth installation took place in February of this year.

East and Southern England remain the top installation regions for the month, with 30,000 and 26,000 installations respectively. The East Midlands is in third place with 21,000.

In July, south Scotland became the 8th region to pass the 1 million cumulative installations since 2012 mark, joining East, North West, South East and Southern England, Yorkshire and the East and West Midlands.

London, North East England, North Scotland, South Wales, South West England and North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire are the regions which are yet to pass 1 million cumulative installations.

According to the latest figures from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) more than 24 million smart and advanced meters overall have been installed in Britain.

Electralink explained that the data it publishes every month is electricity smart meter installations only. Since most gas meters will be installed with an electricity meter it feels there is no need to report two because it counts installations, not meters.

It said it believes the dataset it has on the Energy Market Data Hub (EMDH), from which it publishes its updates, is the best proxy for explaining how the rollout is going, giving an insight into supplier performance with regards to their smart meter programme commitments.

Earlier this month, the Data Communications Company (DCC) revealed the number of smart meters connected to its network had more than doubled in the last year.

In April 2020, 4.2 million SMETS2 and 126,000 SMETS1 devices were connected. One year later the number increased to 7.17 million SMETS2 and 3.87 million SMETS1 meters.
