Smart meter responsibility lies with industry

Speaking in London yesterday, the parliamentary undersecretary for energy and climate change, said that delivery partners will play a “vital” role in preparing for the mass rollout which starts in Autumn 2015.

She said: “All of this activity is integral for ensuring that the roll out gets off to the best possible start and the full benefits of the programme are delivered.”

Baroness Verma added that in the implementation stage, ahead of the mass rollout, the manufacturers are developing and testing meters, while suppliers are developing their internal systems, enabling both to integrate with the Data and Communications Company (DCC).

She added that the consumer engagement plan the Central Delivery Body is due to publish in December “will be a key milestone in the delivery of smart meters”.

The plan will set out a range of centralised programme of activities to “build confidence and understanding of how to use smart meters”.
