A total of 80,600 smart meters were installed in domestic properties in the second quarter of 2013, according to quarterly figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc),
Just 23,600 were installed in the first quarter of 2013 with 107,500 installed to date.
Decc says that during the foundation stage it is working with the energy industry, consumer groups and other stakeholders to ensure “all the necessary groundwork is completed before energy suppliers start the mass roll-out in autumn 2015”.
The operation is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
In a statement Decc said: “The roll-out of smart meters will play an important role in Britain’s transition to a low-carbon economy and help meet some of the long-term challenges in ensuring an
affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply.”
According to the government, smart meters will give consumers near real time information on their energy consumption to help save money and reduce emissions.
