Smart meters ‘key’ to 24 hour switching

Speaking at the Smart Metering Forum yesterday, the parliamentary undersecretary for energy and climate change echoed comments made by energy secretary Ed Davey in his annual energy statement, that 24 hour switching is an “ambition” for the government.

She said smart meters will “enhance the power and understanding” of energy customers, and transform their experience as consumers.

Baroness Verma added that “smart meter will make consumers better informed and more easily able to switch suppliers in order to see reductions on their bills” while for pre-payment customers topping up will be “as easy as topping up a mobile phone”.

As the industry now moves “firmly into the implementation phase” of the rollout, Baroness Verma also told he industry that by 2015, the government expects all the major energy suppliers to be offering smart meter services to both credit and pre-payment customers.
