Smartest Energy to guarantee renewable supply

The move comes in response to a growing demand among businesses to reduce their carbon footprints and puts Smartest Energy in competition with independent suppliers Ovo Energy and Good Energy which both offer business customers supply deals with a guarantee of 100 per cent renewable energy sources.

Smartest Energy said customers will also be able to specify the type of renewable energy and source they wish to purchase from, and have increased confidence in the credentials of that renewable energy.

Smartest Energy also said that the label could help support renewable generators following the removal of the exemption of renewable power from the Climate Change Levy.

Smartest Energy’s chief executive Richard Groves said: “A growing number of large businesses are looking to reduce their carbon footprint by buying 100 per cent renewable electricity and we believe this energy label will support that ambition.

“We recognise some organisations will want to go further and specify the types of renewable electricity they buy – whether that be just from natural sources or from a particular technology or project – and we can support that.”

The Carbon Trust’s chief executive Tom Delay said: “This new service from Smartest Energy is providing exactly the kind of transparency required to ensure that suppliers of electricity are not contributing to double counting or under reporting of corporate emissions, by enabling certificates to be tracked and attributed to specific tariffs or customers.”
