SSE advises customers to apply for Warm Home Discount before deadline

Most of the big six suppliers have a cut-off date at the end of January, but SSE’s falls almost two weeks earlier.

The scheme is split into two groups, core and broader. Households in the core group automatically receive the discount from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) but those in the broader group have to apply to their energy supplier for the discount.

The UK Government launched the scheme in 2011 to legally oblige suppliers with more than 250,000 customers to offer those qualifying a rebate on their winter electricity costs.

In a statement, SSE’s Customer Forum chair Jenny Saunders urged vulnerable customers to ask their supplier about the Warm Home Discount.

She said: “Fuel poverty is caused by a combination of low incomes and poorly insulated homes with inefficient, old and expensive-to-run heating systems, leading to wasted energy and high fuel bills.”

SSE has supported around 270,000 eligible customers with the £140 discount on their electricity bill and expects to help 60,000 more before the end of March.
