SSE has unveiled plans to build a new gas plant on the site of its decommissioned Ferrybridge C coal-fired power station which closed in March 2016.
The new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, which will be called Ferrybridge D, will have a generating capacity of 2,000MW.
The company will launch a consultation on the proposals in the coming weeks and expects to submit an application for a development consent order to the secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy in the first quarter of 2019.
SSE project development manager Jim Lawrie said: “The Ferrybridge C coal station played a key part in delivering the energy needed to support supply for the UK for over 50 years.
“The development of a new power station at the site marks the next step in our commitment to invest in the area. We look forward to engaging with local stakeholders throughout our consultation for this new development.”
SSE is currently finalising plans for the demolition of Ferrybridge C, with work anticipated to begin during 2018. The company owns a 50 per cent stake in the adjacent Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 and 2 energy-from-waste projects.
