SSE Renewables has submitted an application to Scottish ministers to vary the existing consent for the proposed Strathy South windfarm to use larger turbines and thereby increase its capacity.
The company received permission in April 2018 to build a 133MW windfarm near its already operational Strathy North array that would be composed of 39 turbines with a tip height of 135 metres. It is now seeking to increase the maximum height to 200 metres and the overall capacity of the windfarm to 208MW.
Project manager Jon Soal said: “Strathy South has received incredible levels of support from the local community over the years which has been fantastic and is hugely appreciated by the project team.
“If consented, we are confident know that Strathy South can build on the success of the existing Strathy North site and bring benefits to local businesses and communities, both during construction and throughout its lifetime.”
SSE has also sought to change the permitted route for access tracks to avoid areas of deep peat and install LIDAR equipment instead of the consented meteorological masts.
