SSE takes control of Machrihanish turbine tower manufacturer

The two firms formed the Wind Towers joint venture in February last year in order to save the plant after owners Skykon filed for bankruptcy in late 2010. Before that it was owned by Vestas.

Since rescuing the facility, SSE said it has secured a number of orders and will also be able to build offshore wind turbine towers. SSE simultaneously announced that the factory will supply its 23MW wind farm at Cour, in Argyll and Bute.

SSE’s group services MD, Jim McPhillimy, said the move would help bolster Scotland’s renewable energy supply chain.

Senior management is not affected by the decision and the firm’s headcount is expected to remain at around 100 employees.
