SSE to cut gas bills by 4.1 per cent

Following price cuts by EonBritish GasScottish Powernpower and Ecotricity over the past two weeks, leaving EDF Energy as the only big six supplier not to have cut its gas prices following steadily declining wholesale costs seen over the past nine months.

SSE claims its latest price cut will lower a typical gas bill by 7 per cent compared with this time last year.

Last March, the supplier announced a freeze of its electricity and gas prices for its customers until at least January 2016 as part of a series of reforms to cut energy bills.

SSE director Steve Forbes assured customers their standard energy prices won’t increase “under any circumstances” before July 2016.

He said: “Our prices are coming down, they’re staying down and we want to work with government to bring them down further.”

SSE says it is “committed” to giving its customers prices that are both “competitive and stable” and wants to protect vulnerable customers by funding environmental and social policies through taxation.
