Treasury to back finance for second new nuclear plant at Wylfa

In line with plans to underwrite finance to EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C, government is set to offer a guarantee to the proposed Wylfa plant in North Wales.

At the launch of its National Infrastructure Plan, the Treasury said it has entered a “cooperation agreement” with Hitachi and Horizon to support the financing of “Wylfa Newydd”.

However, the project is still in very early stages and government is not aiming to agree an in-principle guarantee until the end of 2016.

According to the NIP, there are some 275 energy infrastructure projects worth £219 billion in the pipeline.
