UK wasting €300m on energy bills

The study revealed that there is a potential for €297,327,508 to be cut from annual consumer energy bills through the adoption of better behavioural energy efficiency.

This would help cut the UK’s energy consumption by up to 2.1TWh of electricity and gas per year, and cutting carbon emissions by 647,839 tonnes of CO2.

The global study revealed that Germany has the potential to save up to 2.2TWh annually, representing a €521 million saving on energy bills.

Opower also found that European consumers could save a total of €2,4 billion on annual energy bills by adopting more energy efficient behaviours.

John Webster, vice president of marketing and strategy at Opower EMEA said: “Behavioural energy efficiency remains largely untapped by much of Europe – clearly there is a real opportunity here for many countries to cost-effectively cut their greenhouse gas emissions and increase consumer affordability.

“Take Germany as a prime example. Here is a market that has long invested in green technologies to reduce carbon usage on the supply side.

“Yet our study clearly reveals the size of their energy efficiency prize and the importance of demand side management, with consumer savings instead of consumer costs.

“Germany has the most potential to save energy simply by focusing on the role that individual consumers and businesses can play through informed behavioural change.”
